Grendel

The Grendel is a gigantic being usually depicted as a monster. Grendel is one of the three main antagonists of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf.

Story[]

In the epic poem Beowulf, Grendel is a gigantic monster that has been described as descendants of Cain. Grendel starts attacking the mead-hall Heorot and devouring the drunken warriors. When word of Grendel's attacks on the hall reaches Geatland, Beowulf, decides to sail to Denmark with his best men in order to slay him. After meeting Hrothgar, Beowulf and his men spent the night in Heorot, awaiting Grendel's arrival. Grendel arrives and manages to eat one of Beowulf's men before attempting to eat Beowulf. Beowulf surprises Grendel and tightly holds Grendel's arm, preventing him from retreating. During the battle, Beowulf's men attempt to help him by slashing Grendel with their weapons, but due to Grendel's spells, it has no effect. Beowulf eventually tears one of Grendel's arms off, keeping it as a trophy, while Grendel runs back to his lair where he dies due to excessive bleeding. Later, Grendel's mother wrecks havoc as a form of revenge for Grendel's death. She is later slain by Beowulf as well.
